DIVORCE FREE CONSULTATION

The DIVORCE FREE CONSULTATION……..We see it all over the internet….“FREE DIVORCE CONSULTATION”… But what does this really mean? Are you going to learn something or are you just being “screened” to see if you have enough money to hire the lawyers posting the advertisement?

In a recent psychology course, we were told that you should NEVER give away a therapy session as it will have no meaning if it is free. This is because people do not believe they have received anything of value if they have not paid for it, and the more they pay, the more the client perceives they have gotten that is of value. So – is a $300 per hour divorce lawyer better than a $500 per hour divorce lawyer? The answer is “Only if YOU think so!” We know many lawyers who charge $185 per hour that are much better at it then many lawyers we know at $500 per hour. The important thing is “how YOU the CLIENT feels.”

So – back to the point of this. Our firm, like most, will do a brief telephone screening to see if you really need a lawyer or not. Sometimes these last 2 minutes and sometimes 20 minutes. If you sound reasonable and you need help, the lawyer is very likely to make an appointment with you and sit down with you from 30 minutes to an hour, at NO cost. Most legitimate divorce lawyers want to see if you are in a situation that they can help with and also to get you to understand what can really be done for you – in other words – do you have legitimate expectations. A fellow who walks in and says he is broke, owes everyone and is 2 years behind on his child support, may not have a great chance of reversing a strict and limited time sharing order. These things take money, time and real issues. Some clients have none.

We like to help people who come in to see us. It makes for “good” business to meet with people and try to help them – even for free – as they are most likely going to call you if their problem gets really bad and they need a lawyer they can trust. So – if the lawyer offers a free consult and does not really give you the time of day – run like heck! They probably do not care about you. However, if a lawyer is willing to give you respect and courtesy and not watch the clock – you may want to consider trusting this person.

If you find yourself in such a position it is best to consult an attorney with substantial experience. There are so many different circumstances that a proper answer to your particular problem can only be obtained by a trained and experienced lawyer.
