In the state of Florida, windshield cracks and chips are repaired free of charge.
According to Florida statute 627.7288, if you have comprehensive coverage on your vehicle your insurance company will pick up the tab for any repair or replacement that you may need. The law states that your deductible will be waived. In most cases, your insurance company will send someone to your home or office to replace or repair your windshield.
We have had this happen several times. Naturally on I95. A stone flew up and “SMACK” right into the windshield, yielding a small ‘hole” – not even a crack. But, within an hour, the ding turned into a three inch crack. The insurer had a windshield repair company at our home the next day. The repairman said he could “repair” the crack. They loaded it with some kind of special glue – and you could not see the crack or the ding. But a few days later, the crack appeared again and grew larger. The repair company came out again and replaced the entire windshield. You DO NOT have to accept a repair – you can have the windshield replaced. DO NOT settle for a shoddy repair. If the windshield is not properly repaired, it can shatter at a bad time, causing a serious accident and injury.
