Having been in the divorce business for over thirty years, the phone starts ringing at the holidays and before the summer break.  Most divorced couples with children have the opportunity to spend blocks of quality time with their children during the summer.   Most of our clients equally divide the summer with the children spending large blocks of time with each parent.  Normally the regular time sharing rotation is suspended and this is a time for summer trips, bonding and giving a parent who has the children primarily during the school year a much needed break.  In many cases, when the children are younger there is little to no problem but this time sharing may not always work when the children are teenagers and their own personal life and personal schedules are more important than spending quality time with mom or dad.  Although teenagers should always get a say, they shouldn’t always get their way.  It is important to recognize  teenager’s needs and wants when it comes to summertime time-sharing, but don’t be shocked when your teenager would rather stay close to home to be near a their friends, a boyfriend or girlfriend, a  summer job or sports camp. Be flexible with them and find ways that you can spend time with them and still accommodate some of their own wishes and desires. Do your best to work with your former spouse to ensure that a summer time schedule makes sense for everyone.  Planning ahead and scheduling out the summer in April or May is a good way to avoid confusion and to provide your teenager with a realistic expectation of what they are and are not going to be able to do with their summer.  Keep in mind that arguments about summer visitation will NOT be heard by a court, whether the judge or magistrate, for at least 2-4 months after the initial motion is filed.  Therefore – expecting timely help from the court system is not something you can rely on.
